HUNTS: Setting Up
HUNT STATUS:  Who Has Their Bear So Far? (The picture version.)

Bob McNeff

Bob saw a bear the 2nd day of the hunt. It was the first bear he had seen in the wild and he decided to wait, even though the bear looked really big. Two days later he saw a bear's black ears 60 yards away in the thick woods. The bear made a half circle behind Bob and he got a good look at it and knew he would shoot if he got the opportunity.
Bob lost sight of the bear when it got behind him. A white bait bucket was 10 yards to Bob's right and out of the corner of his eye he noticed that he couldn't see it anymore. He turned his head and saw the bear standing in front of it.

The bear stood for 5 minutes, looking the area over. He didn't know Bob was right above him. Then the bear moved to the right and came slowly to the bait. He yanked the logs off and started eating the candy.

Bob waited, "for an opportunity to shoot him, which I got. He got in the right position, reaching for a log, and I shot him with my crossbow. The bear jumped over a bunch of logs to the left of the bait and ran 20 yards and I saw him go down. He did the moan and lay still. I waited a few minutes and went to the bear, made sure he was dead, and picked my stuff up and went out to wait for my son Rob to pick me up. My heart was pumping pretty good, I didn't think it would excite me that much, as much hunting as I've done. Rob told me he had got a bear too. That was really cool, both of us getting bears the same day. We called my grandson immediately on the cell phone and told him."

This is Bob's first bear, first bear hunt, the first time he and his son had hunted together, and the first time he shot a game animal with the crossbow.

Bob's advice to new bear hunters is, "Come and try it, it's great. I didn't think I would get excited, but was I wrong there."

Bob owns Wells Creek Outfitters in Clayton, Illinois. They have been in business 15 years. Bob says, "We're a full service outfitter, we specialize in bowhunts for trophy Whitetail bucks and we've had great success over the years."

Both Fred and I have bowhunter with Bob & his son Rob and they have a top notch trophy whitetail buck operation for bowhunters. They only take a limited amount of hunters, there are plenty of stands in great locations on local farms and they understand what bowhunters need for a successful hunt.  Their web site is www.WellsCreekOutfitters.com.
