HUNTS: Setting Up
HUNT STATUS:  Who Has Their Bear So Far? (The picture version.)

Fred Lutger - Wheew, is that a bear?
Fred's First Double Bull Ground Blind Hunt (Test #2)

Fred and I carried in 2 fold up chairs, the bait bucket and the most of our gear in to the Caution stand area. There were 37 events counted on the Trailtimer EZ Cam and all the film was used.

I moved the Double Bull blind a few feet, I liked it better there. Fred dumped the candy on the bait and covered it with the scattered logs. Then he returned to his truck for his bow, video camera and tripod. He joined me in the blind, sat down in his chair and opened his camera bag.

I tapped Fred on the shoulder and pointed.

Straight ahead of us, 10 yards away, already standing by the bait logs, was a black bear. Fred hadn't been in the blind 90 seconds.

I took a few bear pictures while Fred set up his video camera and put on his Double Bull Black jacket. We weren't interested in this bear and it did its thing for 20 minutes and left.

Next, a young bear visited the bait. The area between its ears was almost bald.

We heard a branch crack in the distance and the bear at the bait zipped into the brush.

A third bear, not that much larger, but with full head of hair, joined us for an afternoon snack and a cure for it's sweet tooth.

Later Fred whispered that the big bear on the TrailTimer pics was 15 yards to our right. I could not see it and didn't risk moving to get a look. It watched the area ten minutes and slowly walked behind our blind.

Strong bear odor filled the air, this dude was close. And he smelt way bad. It lay down in a dip a few yards to our left. An hour later we heard it stepping quietly in the ditch. The bear smell was unbelievably strong.

We couldn't see the bear because it was down in the ditch. But from the sound we expected it to walk out a few yards from us and we were ready, Fred with his bow and arrow and me with the video camera.

However the bear had some other plan and the bear's stench faded away.

Twenty minutes later Fred signaled he saw a bear's leg in the woods on the hill behind the bait. Soon we saw a bear's outline take shape in the ground cover, a large bear. It walked slowly along in the trees inside the edge of the woods. Then it melted into the thick brush behind the bait logs, it wasn't ready to come out yet.

Daylight faded and the bear no showed us. In the morning we will rush the TrailTimer pictures into town tomorrow and then we will be back for a re-match with ol' bad body odor himself.

TO THE NEXT DAY...
