2nd Night: Back at 2K around 4:00, got situated and settled in. Checked his pocket watch, oops, it slipped and fell to the ground. Jeff stood up and was searching the ground for the watch. A black figure caught his attention. A nice size bear 15 yards into the trees. The bear circled behind the bait and moved to it from the right side. Then it went directly to the bait. Suddenly it went on alert, looked behind itself, and darted a few yards into the trees. After a couple of minutes the bear cautiously returned to the bait and began removing the logs that covered the bait. Jeff's bow was on a bow hanger
and he slowly got the bow and moved into shooting position. When the bear
was broadside and with it's head down Jeff drew.
The bear bear ran into it's
back trail. Jeff sat down and reflected on the moment that had just happened.
He heard the bear go down and then heard the death moan.
He waited about an hour and
got down. He retrieved his arrow and found a good blood trail. "It was
a good blood trail and led right to the bear. I stepped it off and it was
23 yards to the bait."
It proceeded to the bait
and tore into the logs and had a feast. At dark the bear left.
This is Jeff's first bear. His advice to first time bear hunters is, "Read and study all the bear hunting videos you can get your hands on. The one I studied over and over again was Fred Lutger's Jaws N' Claws. I liked it because it didn't look staged, it was live action and the information was helpful on this hunt. The way I found out about Fred was on Bowhunting.net." "I had hunted bear 19 years
ago and never lost the fever for it. And I always wanted to come back,
and it took that long to squeeze it into everything that was going on.
I'll be back."
