At Home - 2006
Part 1: Finding The
Last Hay Barn
Truthfully I was not specifically searching for the "Last Hay Barn" -- I wanted to locate where one or more of the bigger bucks hang out ... in the daylight ... and the "Last Hay Barn" turned out to be the place. It took some thinking and some extra effort but, heck, that's just the way I like it. This year three high tech hunting items played a big part in my deerhunts at the home place. Getting Pictures 24 - 7
Leave it in the field for days and it will take pictures all the while, day or night. Unlike film, which runs out after 12, 24 or 36 shots, the digital CamTrakker keeps on picture taking 24 - 7 ... for weeks. When I put a 1 gigabyte memory card in my CamTrakker and it will take 500,000 pictures before it runs out of disk space. If you want to pick up the pictures every day or two you can do that too. I bought two 512 meg memory cards so I could swap the disks out regularly. By setting the CamTrakker to wait a minimum of 30 seconds before it is ready to take another photo I've taken as many as 200 pictures in a singe night. When I came home from Illinois I was ready to get myself where a big buck was. The story the CamTrakker told was that the big bucks only came up to my food plot at night. Lets Do It Wireless!
So what do I like abut the BuckEye Cam system. That one word in the first sentence of the previous paragraph, the one that starts with "w" and ends with "s" and rhymes with wireless. You can put it in the woods and watch an area day and night and only go in the woods twice, once to set up the camera, and lastly to pick it up. Back to the wireless bit. The system I am using has (1) the infrared camera and (2) a Base Station that plugs into a USB port on my laptop. The camera transmits the pictures it takes to the Base Station and directly into your computer -- from up to 1 1/2 miles away. In case it didn't register with you, that's up to 1 1/2 MILES away. Wow, what a concept. I like it. If I want to watch a deer trail by a fence crossing I set the camera up and can check my laptop to see what comes by -- from a long ways away. The camera comes with a 12 volt battery and a solar panel to keep it charged in the field. I originally had it watching trails around my food plot but in October I wanted to get in the woods to locate a buck or two that I had seen in the nighttime pictures. Super Low Impact Scouting
There are two parts to the Elimitrax, the leggings and the boot soles. The leggings are like chaps with feet. You slip them on over your hunting boots, pull them up over your pants, and they snap to your belt or a belt loop of your pants. Then the soles snap on over your boot with adjustable straps. When you walk you do not leave any scent from your boots, your feet or the legs of your pants. With a small amount of effort you can walk in your hunting area without leaving any trace of your scent. I'm sure you can see the niceties of that. ONWARD... Here is the story of how these new 3 items got me smack in the middle of some mature bucks ... and Big Boy 10.
