Hunting
Easterns At Possum's
by Tony Dukes
First Eastern Hunt (Missouri):
Called
my ol' buddy Ed Anders of Possum's
Trading Post Outfitters in N.E. Missouri when Fred and I discovered
we had a couple of extra days to hunt since we'd got our
Merriam's the first day with Dave Keiser of Double K Guide Service
out of South Dakota.
When Possum tells you to come on down, you start to feel good immediately.
He operates one of the neatest, unique, outfits I've ever visited, nestled
in the game rich hills of Missouri Robert and I deer
hunted there last year and it was like the Hilton in the hills, but
better.
First morning:
Fred was covered up with Eastern turkey and I heard and saw lots, but
none close enough for the bow. By a little after 11:00 I had a bird working
but at noon, end of legal hunting time, he was several hundred yards away,
but coming my way. Darn it!
Fred had a hen come to his hen and Montana Decoy Strutting Tom. He took
the pictures below as it joined the hen decoy and surprisingly dropped
to the ground in mating position for the Tom.

The next morning Possum took me out. It was windy and cold, but ol'
Possum cranked in 3 or 4 gobblers. It was just a matter of yards or a bush.
I had to turn around a couple of times because Possum sounded like a flock
of turkey all at once. What he did, the turkey liked. We moved and he worked
another bird, but once again it kept just out of range.
The 3rd morning Fred and I both had bird encounters. It was extremely
windy with intermittent rain. I kept calling and late in the morning a
longbeard come in. If I would have know that the wind was going to lift
my blind I would've taken the shot I had offered, only he was coming my
way at 35 yards. A gust of wind, blind shift and he was gone. I should
have staked the blind.
When we returned to camp Chris Pedersen was waiting with a nice Missouri
Eastern gobbler.
Fred Lutger (sitting),
Possum (Ed Anders), Chris Pedersen and his guide.
In 3 mornings of hunting Fred and I both had big birds in shotgun range,
saw and heard lots of birds, and had a chance to visit and eat with the
Anders family which is about as good a treat as you get. The food there
and the atmosphere is worth the cost of the hunt. Not only in the best
turkey area in the United states, but Possum produces B&C deer every
year and has bowhunting only areas at a very reasonable price. Better than
six flags!
We also got these pics of successful turkey hunters at Possum's.

Thanks Possum and family ........ Tony Dukes
