BOWHUNT: Antelope In Wyoming
Sept 11, 2000 - Day
#4
After I pigged out on my
brown bag lunch several antelope appeared on the hilltop 250 yards away
and directly in front of my blind. One was a buck with high, black, heart
shaped horns. My latest blind is in between two depressions that are full
of run-off water from a windmill 200 yards further uphill. A doe walked
down and drank water from the small watering hole on my right. The hilltop
figures of more antelope appeared. I couldn't keep track of them, I was
concerned about my movement. It's important not to spook the first doe
in. There was some sort of disruption and several does ran away and out
of sight. But the buck and his 5 doe harem stayed. The doe finished drinking
and walked slowly uphill toward the buck.
The group left my valley. A
couple hours later a lone antelope crested the hill and came on down. It
drank from the water on my right and then it walked away, no other antelope
were in sight.
I saw a few more antelope but
they didn't come in. The buck I saw took his does to Ande's area and they
all moved into the open in front of the elevated blind he was in. Ande
drew. The buck turned and the shot angle went from good (broadside) to
bad (butt first). Ande held, hoping the buck would turn but it didn't.
A doe walked straight away from Ande and the buck started walking in her
direction. He was now quartering away, but not quite enough, however, a
perfectly placed arrow would get the lungs. But a slip up left or right
would put it in the butt or front shoulder. Ande is a NFAA Indoor 300 shooter
and he can "dot the I" at this range but he is also an ethical bowhunter
and didn't take this marginal shot.
The wind finally laid today
and the antelope moved better than the last few days when the wind was
screaming. No antelope were taken today although some oportunities almost
came down but didn't work out.
