Day 5
Early morning. The weather
was good for a change. I settled in at the Curve blind.
I didn't have to settle long,
I heard hooves stepping in the road and peered out through the blind's
mesh window to my left.
The spotted boar was bringing
it on down to me. I clicked the camera on and took three pictures through
the shooting window. This time I wasn't going overboard and with the pictures
and miss the bow shooting part.
Well ... I didn't intend
to. The hog was already past my left shooting window!
Right now he was 8- 10 yards
away and walking leisurely along. Once he got to one of the right windows
he would be further away and starting around the curve. He might be broadside
then, and might not, in fact there was a chance I might be looking at his
butt and be unable to shoot.
I drew, put my pin on him
through the Double Bull's long, but narrow, mesh window and shot through
the camo fabric of the blind. My arrow smacked through the boar's ribs
and he switched directions and ran toward the opposite side. Abruptly,
he turned again and sped into the brush on the left side of the blind.
He stopped running. I listened.
Silence. He was down, close by.
Chad wouldn't pick me up
for over an hour so I stayed put. Half an hour later I saw a javelina in
the brush. I picked up my camera took his picture as he came out to the
edge of the thick Texas white brush and cactus.
The javelina was preoccupied
with something in the direction of the road. I looked to see what was up.
A coyote was in the sitting in the road! And he seemed to be watching the
javelina.
I
eased over to another shooting window and pointed the camera at the coyote.
He stood up and I took two pictures. I didn't realize it at the time, but
the camera focused on a bush between the two of us, however, you can make
out the coyote's image. I wanted to shoot the javelina but I waited to
see how this played out.
The coyote walked into the
brush on the opposite side of the road.
When I looked, the javelina
was gone. Here is one of the pictures on him. To make up for not getting
him I made you wallpaper of this bristly, sharp toothed desert dweller.
Even if you don't want it for your computer's wallpaper take a look at
how these animals look up close. Choices of resolution: 1024x780
or 800x600 or 640x480.
Enjoy.
Chad drove up and we picked
up the spotted hog's blood trail and followed him into the brush. He was
30 yards from the road.
Chad reported that
his black boar from yesterday afternoon had been found by either coyotes
or wild hogs before he found it.
We loaded my wild hog in
the truck and took him to the ranch to make him into pork chops and roasts.
The 5th day of the hunt is
over. Tomorrow, we'll have more about this fine Texas hunting ranch and
thieir plans for bowhunting.
