L to R: Robert Hoague, Ricky Philippi, Merle Smith
and Rick Philippi.

Merle and Vanessa Smith are the owners of the Texas S Bowhunting Ranch. Merle is an easy going, friendly fella who operates a super place for bowhunters to hunt wild hogs. The story behind the hog hunts is an interesting one. It was an accident.

Merle Smith was an underground utilities contractor in Dallas, Texas and five years ago he purchased 30 acres near Clarksville, Texas for his retirement. They decided to raise exotic deer on the property and purchased 5 fallow deer, one buck and 4 does. Merle and Vanessa continued to live in Dallas and visited their land on weekends. Three years later the fallow deer population grew to 13 fallow deer, which was well beyond the carrying capacity of the acreage so they had to provide supplemental feeding for the deer. That got expensive fast.

A little over a year ago Merle decided to buy the neighboring 73 more acres and high fenced it to keep the deer in. Then he bought another 100 acres.

When the fence was finished Merle got a surprise, he had fenced in a bunch of wild hogs.

Merle told me, "We knew there was a big wild hog population in the area. For instance, dog's don't last long around here, if the hogs catch a dog in their area they will attack it and kill it. Wild hogs are a problem with the deer too because during their fawning season the hogs agressively hunt down the fawns and eat them."

A friend of Merle's, a Farmers Branch city inspector and part time outdoor writer, talked him into hunting on the ranch and the first time ever hog hunt took place on the Texas S. Merle's friend got the story of their bowhunt published, four bowhunters took a hog each. Merle booked a couple of hunts right off. And those hunters talked to other hunters, etc., and the ranch quickly had regular bookings.

Merle quit working in 1999 and went full time with his hog bowhunting operation. Things have gone well.

Four months ago Vanessa came up with the idea to put the Texas S Bowhunting Ranch on the Internet. Merle didn't know anything about computers  and felt it would be a waste of their money. But Vanessa was determined to get on the net so Merle agreed to try it. They hired a page built. People started phoning and emailing them right away.

Now 60% of the Texas S bookings comes from the net.

Merle wants to give every hunter a good hunt. He has productive stands and feeder sites or bowhunters can stalk, whichever they want. Texas S only books 2-6 hunters for any given day.

The ranch has a rustic but modern camp house with cooking facilities, comfortable beds, air conditioning, a shower, and  wood floors so hunters don't have to worry about muddy feet when it rains. One of the things I personally appreciated was all the hooks and places to hang stuff. The day that it rained we all got soaked and those hooks came in very handy to dry out our camo clothes.

The Texas S has an expansion underway. The new property is currently being high fenced and the grand opening  is targeted for August. 31. For anyone interested in bowhunting for exotics the Texas S also has fallow deer, axis deer, red stags, black buck antelope and exotic rams.
