Day #2

A group of wild hogs were rooting in the area around Ricky Philippi's treestand. He spotted more in the distance and watched as they came closer. Hogs were scatered all around. A big hog jumped into a hog wallow 15 yards away and Ricky drew as the hog splashed around in the muck. His shot double lunged the hog and it ran into the dense brush and trees. He radioed Rick and they took up the blood trail, there was a lot of blood and it led to the hog 40 yards in the brush.

I couldn't get updated Tuesday night and had to do it first thing this morning. Afterward I went to my stand by Pond #2 and waited. I didn't see anything and eventually got down and started looking for hogs. I saw a group of hogs in the Pines in the center of the property. I followed them, keeping way bakc so they wouldn't see me. Eventually they went down into a draw and I cut wide, walking briskly until I was well ahead of them. I slipped into the draw. In a few minutes I saw the hogs, they were further down and out of range. The brush was thick here so I went right after them on the trail they had used. They came to an area where there was a large mud wallow and I saw several young hogs right down in the mud and rooting and pushing each other. A couple of the hogs that I was following waded into the muck

Taking my time I slowly closed the distance to 25 yards. A young black pig tried to get in the mud but the hogs wouldn't let it join them. The pig walked away in my direction. I held still and it walked by a few yards to my left. In a few minutes a boar moved up out of the wallow and I could see a shot opportunity coming down. Something moved behind me.

The black pig stood staring at me about five steps away. I looked back at the boar. It was in the clear, I had a shot I could make -- if the black pig didn't run when I drew.

It didn't. My arrow went into the boars chest on the right side angling forward through the left shoulder. It was a "boney" sounding hit but it was in the lungs. The entire group ran into the swamp and I circled to cut them off. It worked, I spotted the group going downhill. One hog was lagging behind. I found a shooting hole in the vines and trees and when the boar moved into it my arrow smacked through it and stuck in a downed tree behind the hog. The boar went down right away, finished.

We all came for lunch. Turtle had gone to get his hog processed. We drove to Clarksville and ate with Dink Benton and his daughter Bonnie. Dink's ranch is near here. While we were talking about hunting stuff it started to rain.

Rain and more rain came when we returned to camp. We waited to see if it would let up. It didn't.

The rain stops and we go hunting, Day #3...
