A Close Look At
Where We Are On July 19
This year, two very interesting bucks -- as of July 19 -- are a 9-point and a buck with irregular antlers. In a close up picture that I took yesterday, the 9 has the most advanced antlers of any buck that either myself or the CamTrakker have taken pictures of. With a good 5-6 weeks of antler growing to do he shows real promise for growing a fine rack. His tines are inching up longer day by day. His main beams will continue to get longer and if he pops another point on the right side he will be a 10 point. It is not so obvious from a distant picture but from my close up (1024 x 768 or 800 x 600) you can see he is very bony looking. He needs some weight on him. The other buck has 4 points on his right beam and the left antler is growing straight up. We can't see that antler so well in this picture but we can see him and he is in good shape. Notice how high his rump is, and his front shoulder -- when compared to the July 9-point next to him. He is definitely a tall buck. And he has a bit of a gut too. Could he be the son of the Freak buck from two years ago? Or is he the Freak? It's not easy to tell this early, but in September when the bucks have filled out more and their necks fatten up some we should have better insight on this buck. If these two bucks continue to hang around where I can get pictures of them we should have a lot of fun following their development for 2006.
