Scouting For Wild Hogs In Early May 2003
Scouting A New Wild hog Area:  On the way to my truck after one of the Grand Slam bowhunts for a Rio I noticed a place where wild hogs had dug under the fence and tore up a six foot area in the coastal grass. Later that day I returned with a ladder stand and checked the area out.
This is a narrow finger of dense woods and briars -- only 80 yards wide -- bordered on the North by an 80 acre coastal field and the South by a large planted grain field. There were lots of trails here getting heavy hog usage. A dry creek runs parallel to the field. I found a green, algae filled pool of water and muddy hog wallows. And the hog smell in the thicket and slew areas was very pungent.
I set up near the fence on the coastal field side where I can hunt the trail leading to the hole under the fence. I used a North Starr ladder stand here because it is fast, easy and I can move it in a flash if i'm not in the right place. I call this area the "Slew Hole" after the slew and the hole under the fence. To The First Hunt At The "Slew Hole"
