A Wild Hog Bowhunt In Progress - 2003

May 18, 2003 - Spotted Boar At The Slew Hole
93 degrees but off and on winds and the shade kept it ok. This afternoon I had come here to put staples in the fence post wires near here so I can slip into the area my favorite way, low impact. As the shadows grew longer I concluded that the hammering had moved the hogs off for the afternoon. I started my traditional slow count to 100 before I made the noise it takes to get down and leave. A step in the leaves stopped my count cold. I waited ... and saw a spotted boar, a large one, downhill, walking along the edge of the woods 15 yards away.

The boar turned on the trail leading to the dug out hole under the fence. It came slow and carefully. When it was broadside I drew and took my time, aiming carefully. Woops, the boar turned and walked behind a tree. Soon I had to let down. Minutes later it started back to the trail. This time I didn't waste any time. I drew. The hog's front shoulder appeared. It stopped. I held. Another step, this one exposed the vital lung area. I shot. The hog turned and took a few casual steps, like nothing had happened. But I knew better. Then the boar bolted and in 10 yards it stopped, attached the brush around it, and fell in a heap.
