SPECIAL YOUTH
HUNT - Lets go with Cody Matson (10) and his brother Christopher (12) as
Doug Crabtree takes them wild turkey hunting.
 The
weekend preceding the Ohio wild turkey season is open for hunters under
16 who hunt in designated Public areas. Cody (10) and Christopher (12)
Matson flipped a coin to see who would hunt first and Cody got the luck
and won the toss. But he was going to be even luckier that day ...
Saturday
- Doug took his friend Jim Matson (the father) and the boys, Cody (10)
and Christopher (12) to Cooper Hollow Wildlife Area. Doug called
in two gobblers right from the roost, both Tom's walked behind the blind
and started drumming. One walked to the decoys and Cody shot it with a
410. Not bad for young Cody's first hunt ever!!!
Christopher
hunted in the afternoon. He had the more common experience of, "turkeys
came in but wouldn't give the hunter a shot."
Sunday
- In the morning they returned for a 2nd hunt and got into more wild turkey
action but Christopher just couldn't get a shot at one. Christopher commented,
"I like this stuff, it's fun. I'm tickled to death Cody got one."
Doug
told him and Cody, "I'm proud of you and you can hunt with me any time."
