Mossy Oak Pro Staff Member Parrish Elliott

Q: How important is pre-season scouting?
A: I believe it is the biggest factor in finding where the deer are and what they are feeding on. And hopefully see what kind of deer you have in your hunting spot. It is a great way to get to know the terrain that you will be hunting.

Q: How do you go about scouting in the early season before the bucks are making scrapes?
A: Learn where their travel routes are. A key note is that if this is a normal hunting spot for you, try to remember what the deer was doing the year before. It’s a good possibility that they will be there again.

Q: Do you prefer hunting in the woods or along agricultural fields?
A: I have always loved hunting in the woods. Early season I do try to hunt agricultural fields. But when the acorns start dropping, you will usually find me really close to a white oak that is dropping acorns.

Q: How high should hunters hang their treestand?
A: It depending on the area and the amount of coverage really. Early bow season I try to get at least 15 feet. As the leaves start to drop, I’m normally about 18-20 feet.

Q: Can you have success hunting from the ground?
A: Yes! You really have got to do your homework, on where to put your blind or building a makeshift blind. Make sure you can blend in with your surroundings and make sure you have good shooting lanes. Make sure you watch your movement so you will not be detected.

Q: Are doe or buck decoys effective?
A: Yes, they can be very effective during the rut.

Q: Is scent control important when hunting from a treestand?
A: Yes, you have to deal with the wind. All it takes is just a little wind and it will ruin your day. Once you get in the stand spray yourself again just to make sure you’re not detected.

Q: What calls do you carry?
A: I prefer to carry the Primos Grunt/ Snort and Wheeze and the Can. It comes in handy. It has proved to be very effective from early season to very late in the year.
