Adam Roberts and B.J. Bailey from Gene Sears Supply in El Reno, OK recently took top honors at Nikon’s first ever Spot On Championship. The Spot On Championship was held at CMMG’s Fire For Effect Range near Fayette, MO. Roberts and Baily bested a field of over 80 contestants from outdoor stores across the country.
“Adam and I have competed together before and I’m sure that helped us here,” said Bailey. “But the tension when we started the final head-to-head round was as heavy as any I’ve ever felt!”
The main goal of the Spot On Championship was to give dealers a chance to try a variety of BDC reticles and to see first hand the accuracy of Nikon’s Spot On software. The first day’s competition saw all the teams pitted against each other in a variety of shooting scenarios. The first station required the shooters to work as a team to spin a metal gong with AR rifles in .223, then run to a slug gun station with the option of long or short-range targets. The second station also required a lot of teamwork. One shooter used a handgun to “win” ammo for his partner who was using an AR-22 to knock over prairie dog targets on a moving Target Tracker. The third stage was long-range rifle with the shooters engaging their targets from the back of a military flatbed. And the fourth stage started with muzzleloaders and the option of short or long targets and ended with shooters firing crossbows fitted with the Bolt XR scope at either close or long-range targets.
The second day found the top 16 teams shooting against each other in stations 1 and 2 with the top two teams advancing to the final round. The fast-paced final rounds set the two teams against each other in a head-to-head round. The first member of each team to shoot started with AR-22s and had to knock over steel plate before tagging in his partner who fired ARs in .223 at reactive targets set out to 100 yards. The first shooter was then tagged back in and settled in a bench mounted on a truck for a long-range rifle shot at a deer silhouette fitted with a four inch vital. The first to hit the vital was rewarded with a tremendous fireball.
“Winning the very first Nikon Spot On Championship is a huge deal for us,” said Roberts. “The hands-on product use and info we learned will benefit our customers as well as ourselves for years.”
