I left Bozeman, Montana on Friday afternoon with a long drive ahead. I drove 6 hours to Spearfish, South Dakota to meet up with friend and Bowhunting.Net writer Rick Hanson. Rick and I had talked a few days prior and planned to meet up for a couple days before my bowhunt.

We ended up hanging out Friday night in Sturgis, SD, just up the road from Spearfish. The Sturgis Biker Rally is going on right now and I had never experienced it before, so Rick showed me what it was all about.

Saturday we met up with Rick’s local friends Troy and Karen Nishaus and headed to a local archery range and made sure our bows were right-on. We all shot well and I was really impressed with Karen’s shooting. Karen has  just recently got into archery and bowhunting and is loving it! It is great to see more and more women getting involved with the sport of archery.

Later Saturday afternoon Rick and I headed over to Alzada to check it out. We saw many pronghorn antelope in the fields on the way; the bowhunt with Trophies West looks promising!

We went back to Rick’s place in Spearfish and had a Bar-B-Q with friends planned. Troy and Karen came over and Tanner Sealey, another avid bowhunter and Rick’s neighbor also came. Deer burgers and steaks on the grill, corn-on-the-cob, potatoes, and some cold beverages. What a great way to spend the night with new friends.

I also double checked all of my equipment and put my hunting clothes in the washer to make sure they were scent free for the hunt. I used Sport Wash from Atsko, it doesn’t get any better than this.

I head back to Alzada today and will meet up with the rest of the hunters and writers. It’s finally time! I will be out hunting tomorrow morning, opening day in Montana!

More to come…
