Today the weather improved, bear hunting wise. The temperature dropped just enough for it to be comfortable instead of hot like yesterday was. Also the wind picked up and that created some much needed sound in our piece of Canadian woods. Plus, while we waited we had a nice little rain shower.

Between 5:30 and 6:00 we spotted movement in the woods in front of us. Black splotches moved around through the trees a bear stood up on it’s hind legs and looked our area over. I glassed it with the Luepolds, it was a nice adult bear. While it stood watching everything, Fred and I noticed additional black bear parts moving in the trees.

Three good sized cubs hurried out of the woods, approached the bait logs and started digging around for treats. The larger bear swaggered out of the woods and joined the cubs.

The cubs were intent on scarfing down Fred’s secret bear goodies. A few times  they had brief confrontations of snapping their jaws and swatting at each other. Sometimes one of the cubs took to the safety of the bait tree.

The female bear was a mature sow, definitely a big one. It wandered around pulling the logs apart and getting her share of the goodies.

At one point the sow showed an interest in our Double Bull ground blind — which was only 12 yards from the aforementioned tree. She walked closer and had a look.

The bear cut the distance between us in half and stared at the blind.

We sat still, hopefully hidden by the magic of the black interior of our Double Bull. I felt like everything would be ok as long as the sow didn’t decide we were a threat to her cubs.

Soon the sow turned away and returned to the bait logs. When she spotted a big hog rib she snatched it up in her teeth and went into the woods with it.

The three cubs ate and interacted by posturing and snapping their jaws at each other. After a while a bear came up and stood up 40 yards away in the woods. The cubs all scrambled to climb the tree.

The big female bear came out of the trees and went to the bait again. She picked up a large piece of meat and sundered off with it.

Soon after the sow was gone the cubs left one at a time. While Fred and I waited to see if anything showed up before dusk it began to rain. At dark the Chef picked Fred and I up. This afternoon 3 more bears went down.

The first day’s successful bear hunters got in some fishing and caught a bunch of Smalleys, a few Walleyes and some Northerns. Kirby fried them up and we had a great tasting fish fry with home fried potatoes. Chef Klaus.

I check all 4 of my game camera pictures and the SpyPoint units showed there was plenty of bear activity during the day. We also saw wolves in some of the pictures.

Memories of our friend Dick Lattimer

Mountain weather is unpredictable in September. Later this day it rained hard and snow covered the mountaintops by morning. Staying dry is critical.
