It was finally happening. Double Brow Tine was less than 20 yards away … broadside. I took one quick picture and glanced at the viewfinder on my video camera. I had it on a tripod and it was situated at the bottom of the shooting window in my blind. It looked OK.

I shifted my attention to getting my Alpine FireBall into action. Quietly I clipped my Fletch Hook on the bowstring and looked back at the buck and focused on the area behind his shoulder. I turned my sight’s rheostat on and drew. When the tip of the bright green pin settled in on the vitals I held briefly, making sure everything was just right.

I released.

Clunk! There was a loud noise.

The buck turned and ran. My arrow was too high and too far front … and worse yet, there was hardly any penetration. He ran into the woods to the north and out of sight.

I felt like I swallowed a basketball sized rock.

Right now I wanted to see the video, so I walked back to my house and plugged the video camera into my laptop. When I got to the shot I stopped the frame.

My bow had bumped the tripod. I couldn’t tell anything about my hit. The rock in my stomach got bigger.

My buddy Robbie Cramer was down and when he came in I told him what happened and flashlighted up and went to see what we could find. Robbie found blood right away. The sparce blood trail took us 60 yards into the woods and we lost it.

Once we lost the trail I decided to stop. We would have better luck in the daytime.

Me and my rock laid in my bed all night, never quite sleeping, and waited for morning.
