Double Brow Tine was out of sight. I played the video to see if the shot was indeed on the camera. It was. So I went back to the house and uploaded the video into my laptop and played it.

The shot happened so quick that I couldn’t tell anything. I felt myself panicking.

I called my buddy Rick Philippi. He was bowhunting in Illinois and answered me from his treestand. I told him what happened. We discussed what to do. The shot had looked ok to me, but the part where he ran away and the arrow had lousy penetration and was flapping around, well, that was a bummer.

Our mutual conclusion was that I should wait at least 3 hours before looking for him.

Then I called Billy Don Van Cleave. He said he would come and bring his tracker dog Tater. Billy Don was on the way to a business appointment and after that he would pick up Tater and come over.

I wanted to see my hit. So I loaded the video file in my video editor program and pulled off frames of the shot. Then I texted the clearest pic to both Rick and Billy Don.

From this picture we agreed that the arrow had gotten better penetration than I had first thought. The hit is further forward than I intended but it is still in the rib cage. Apparently the opposite shoulder stopped my arrow, but it went all the way through the rib cage and body cavity.

Rick said he thought the buck was down and only 100 to 150 yards away. I wanted to think that too, but what I knew for certain was our best bet was to put Tater on the trail.

While I waited my buddy Robbie Beckwith and his son Josh and daughter Kayla drove up. They wanted to help track too. I told them Billy Don was on the way with Tater and we would go when they got here.
