Fred started into the woods, looking for a wing or the tail feathers of his gobbler. Some small turkey feathers and a smear of blood got him oriented. Fred went to the fence that separated our chunk of woods from a field and looked around

By the time I got the video camera on and got poked by some limbs Fred found him. He had gone only 60 yards. The cut through its body was huge. The 2-inch 3 blades of the Grim Reaper Whitetail Special made a  a massive wound channel through the vitals

“Congratulations Fred,” I told him. Fred and I have gone on the road for the 4 types of wild turkey each spring for 9 years straight.  And this Rio Grande gobbler was a big deal … it made a total of 6 wild turkey Grand Slams for my bowhunting partner Fred Lutger.

FRED LUTGER’S EQUIPMENT COMMENTS ….

Broadhead: Grim Reaper Whitetail Special

The cut the Grim Reaper Whitetail Speccial made on this wild turkey gobbler was  huge. Last year I used it on wid turkey last for the first time and hunted several states and watched every gobbler go down.  This broadhead should be called Grim Reaper “whitetail, bear and turkey killer.” It is a perfect all around head to get the job done. This broadhead has a massive 2 inch cut that does maximum damage entering, exiting and everything in-between. Being an expandable head it flies like my field points. It comes packaged with a practice head and I checked my sights with it on Robert’s target. To Grim Reaper

ThermaCELL

I’ve been on lots of hunts where I was glad I had a ThermaCELL. But on this hunt we were extra glad. We were swatting mosquitoes before the sun came up on the walk from Robert’s pickup to the ground blind. And turning on the ThermaCELL to beat back the swarm of flying, biting insects was the first thing we did when we got inside the blind. It kept us mosquito  free while we hunted. To ThermaCELL.

Turkey Calls: Hendershot Call Company

Last year Shane Hendershot gave me a couple of his hand made diaphragm calls when we hunted together in Florida. The next day I called in and killed a big longbead Osceola gobbler on Shane’s call. I used it and other calls made by Hendershot the rest of the Spring wild turkey season and killed 6 gobblers. This year, Shane Hendershot has his own turkey call company. Give his calls a try. They work. To Hendershot Calls

Blind: Primos Dark Horse

If you are going to turkey hunt with a bow you must hunt out of a blind to push your success to the max. The Dark Horse pop up ground blind has all the features needed to maximize your success on wild turkeys and other big game. It is black on the inside and allows adjustments to the windows for perfect shooting and concealment. If you video your hunts this is the blind to use. It is easy to set the window openings for videoing. This blind is quick and simple to set up and take down — it has maximum portability. It has definitely increased my turkey hunting success. To Primos Blinds

Release: Tru-Fire Hardcore Black Buckle Foldback Max

The release I used last season was made by Tru-Fire. They have a new release this year, the Hardcore Black Buckle Foldback Max. I saw it at the first archery dealer show I attended this year. I really liked it’s look and feel. I had to try it and am I glad I did. Tru-fire has put its years of release building and knowledge into the best release I have ever used. The first thing I noticed about this release was it’s deep jaw. I like this feature for loop shooting. It is very quick loading for hunting. The deeper loop prevents slip offs. The strap also caught my eye. It is thicker, wider, and build heavy duty. I like heavy duty. That’s a feature I like on all my hunting equipment. To Tru-Fire

Bow: PSE Pro Series X-Force

I set this bow up for deer season last year and it is the perfect choice for turkey hunting. It is fast and has a very flat trajectory. It is all black with black accessories. Sitting in the blind this bow disappears. It is easy and smooth drawing from a sitting position. To PSE

Back Pack: Blacks Creek G7 Day Pack

After using it many years I wore my last pack out. It went to the shoe repairman twice. I didn’t think it could be replaced. But I was wrong. I checked out several packs at the trade shows I attend. I use other Blacks Creeks products and find them well made and durable. I chose the G7 Day Pack for it’s size. It is large enough to fit my cameras, tripod, binoculars, calls, extra jacket, ThermaCELL, water bottle and lunch. At first I wasn’t keen on all the extra pockets this pack has. I have trouble keeping track of my gear if it has more than one pocket. What a pleasant surprise! I am actually a bit more organized. I found a good use for each pocket and now know right where to go for what I need. Thank you Blacks Creek. You have made my life easier. To Blacks Creek

Arrows: Carbon Express

This is a no brainer for me. I’ve shot Carbon Express since their first arrow left the factory. Bob Eastman and Lenny Resmer have built not only the best arrow available but the best arrow factory for consistent quality control and research and development. I have been to their factory in Korea. I got to test their arrows and other arrows made by their competitors. I saw first hand the superior quality of Carbon Express. The end results show up on the range and in the field. Every turkey I have killed has been with a Carbon Express arrow. To Carbon Express
