On February 17,2014 Cabela’s Incorporated announced that Richard N. Cabela, Co-Founder and Chairman Emeritus, passed away at his home in Sidney, Nebraska at the age of 77.

Dick-Cabela-160Cabela’s was the dream of Richard “Dick” Cabela. Dick Cabela always put the outdoorsmen first by providing what hunters and fisherman wanted.

He searched for new products in every outdoor field, always with an eye for his customers. Because of his passion Cabela’s and its products became iconic all around the world.

In 1961 Dick Cabela, his wife Mary, and brother Jim, founded Cabela’s when he purchased $45 worth of fishing flies and ran an ad in Sports Afield magazine.

It read;

“FREE introductory offer!!! 5 popular Grade A hand-tied flies. Send 25c for postage and handling.”

Orders poured in and Dick Dick purchased more fishing gear and he and Mary mimeographed a small catalog and included it with every customer’s orders. As the company grew Dick and Mary made it possible for sportsmen and women to get quality outdoor products regardless of where they lived. Dick Cabela was filmly committed to providing its customers a good value for their money. Dick Cabela, through perseverance and much hard work truly achieved the American Dream.

Cabela’s grew to a $3.6 billion company with a worldwide catalog and Internet business and 50 retail stores in the United States and Canada. Dick Caela was Chairman of the Board until June 2013, when he transitioned to Chairman Emeritus and Jim Cabela became Chairman.

Dick Cabela is survived by his wife, Mary, and their nine children and their families; as well as two sisters and three brothers.
