Hocking Hills, located in Southern Ohio, is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. It offers a great opportunity to visit, rent a cabin, hike the scenic trails, and shop at the Rocky store. Many people are unaware that during one weekend in July, Hocking College hosts the Third Leg of the I.B.O. (International Bowhunting Organization), attracting over a thousand archers from across North America to compete in one of the toughest archery shoots of the year.
“The Challenge”
Each I.B.O. shoot has a unique nickname, and the third leg at Hawking College is known as “The Challenge.” Shooters refer to this event as “The Challenge” because of the rugged terrain and high humidity. I.B.O. President Brian Marcum believes that the third leg is the most difficult event leading up to the I.B.O. World Shoot. I agree with Marcum; I’ve shot challenging courses over the past few years, and this year’s course was especially tough! It was completely different from the 2nd leg at Franklin.
Vendor Village
Every I.B.O. event features a variety of vendors offering everything an archer might need. Among the vendors this year were Black Eagle Arrows, Darton Archery, Rinehart Targets, and Lancaster Archery. For the first time, Hawking College provided a large, air-conditioned building to accommodate the vendors. This significant improvement allowed archers to escape the heat and humidity while browsing. The I.B.O. also set up bleachers and tables where attendees could relax, eat, and catch up with friends. Best of all, the I.B.O. registration trailer was conveniently located within the climate-controlled facility. I commend the I.B.O. for this excellent change!
The Terrain
The Hocking Hills area is truly beautiful, featuring rugged hills and lush forests. Hocking College has ample acreage to accommodate all the International Bowhunting Organization (I.B.O.) courses, which can be laid out in various configurations. This year, I shot on courses that I had never attempted before, and they proved quite challenging. Many shots required us to shoot at steep angles, both uphill and downhill. All of the archers needed to be at their best if they wanted to score over 400! Check out my buddy Lincoln as he prepares to take aim at a black bear target. Overall, the courses I experienced were fun, challenging, and the scenery was absolutely stunning.
The Humidity
The unique geography of the Hocking Hills area traps humidity during the summer months. I started shooting at 9:30 AM, and the humidity was already at 85%. Shooting in such humid conditions can be a challenge because everything feels sticky and wet. Our group hiked the trails to reach each target, regularly wiped down our gear with towels, and stayed hydrated. Staying hydrated was my main concern, but the I.B.O. had strategically placed water stations along the course.
The Dynamic Duo
I needed to shoot all 40 targets in one day, and I knew it would be a challenge. After completing the first 20 targets, I moved to the next range to see if I could join a new group. I didn’t have to wait long at the range tent before I was paired up with the “Dynamic Duo”! Erin and Erika are relatively new to archery. Erin has been shooting a bow for about a year, while Erika recently discovered her passion for the sport. Our group had a fantastic time sharing stories, cracking jokes, and shooting the course. I was impressed by Erin and Erika’s determination and competitive spirit. As you can see from the picture above, we all had a great time!
The End Result
I knew that the 3rd leg of the competition would be challenging, but I was pleased to complete all 40 targets in one day. While I was mentally prepared for the humidity, I wasn’t ready for the difficulties posed by the terrain. Overall, I had a fantastic time meeting new archers, reconnecting with old friends, and enjoying the cool atmosphere in the Vendor Village. I have some work to do and improvements to make before heading to Canaan Valley Resort in August for the World Shoot. I hope to see you there!
