The pre-rut is here, and bucks are moving. Now’s the time to maximize your chance for success by hunting from dawn to dusk, which is no easy task. The key to a full-day hunt is preparation to enjoy the day rather than drudge through it. I’m a massive fan of double-ladder stands, even when hunting alone. The extra space allows you to keep your gear within easy reach and gives you space to spread out for additional comfort.

Maximize Peak Times
Deer move primarily at dawn and dusk throughout the year, so don’t skimp on an early start using your best stalk-the-stand tactics. Make sure you are as scent-free as possible, approach from downwind, and enter the stand as quietly as possible. Rattling works best in the early morning, so have your calls and lures handy for easy use.

Don’t Fight Drowsiness
I once hunted in a full-blown blizzard. I needed to be on the stand throughout the day, but I knew that would not be possible. I planned to hunt until 9:30, which gave me about three hours in brutal conditions. I returned to camp, took a hot shower to warm up, and returned. Just before noon, the biggest buck of my life came by, and I scored. If you get drowsy in a stand, climb down, curl up, and take a nap. A deer may pass, but you must be alert rather than nodding off in a tree. This is also much safer. This video has additional tips for maximizing success.
