I’m excited to start my food plot journey in Northwest Pennsylvania! Although Mother Nature has her quirks—like the surprising snow in early May and the consistent rain—I’m optimistic that the weather will soon turn in our favor. While I wait for sunnier days, I’m using this time to gather all the supplies I’ll need for my project. I can’t wait to dive in and see what this season brings!

Kunz Chisel Plow
In recent years, I’ve faced challenges with my plots because of hardpan, a compacted soil layer. Without a rototiller, I found that a drag harrow wasn’t very effective for breaking it up. This year, I’m thrilled to have invested in a Kuns Engineering Chisel Plow for my John Deere 1025R! I can’t wait to see how it improves the soil, ensuring better seed-to-soil contact. Below, I’ve included the specifications for the Kunz Chisel Plow I purchased.
Discover the impressive 43″ Wide 3-Point Chisel Plow/Cultivator, featuring robust shanks and cutting coulters—perfectly engineered for efficient deep tillage with your compact tractor!
  • 43″ Tillage Width
  • Category 1 Standard 3-Point Hitch System, Quick Hitch Compatible
  • 5 Front Cutting Coulters & 5 Rear Shanks
  • Rigid Shanks Provide Better Ground Penetration
  • Till up to 8? Deep
  • Narrow Chisel Points & 9? Wide Field Cultivator Sweeps Included
  • Attach to Compact Tractors Ranging from 20HP – 40HP

Soil Pro Outdoors
Callie Grubbs introduced me to the fantastic products from Soil Pro Outdoors. They offer a wide range of solutions to help maintain your soil and create the ideal environment for seed growth. I appreciate that all their products are in liquid form, which I can easily mix with water in my sprayer. Since I have one acre of food plots, the 1-acre food plot kit from Soil Pro Outdoors is perfect for jumping-starting my plots and enriching my soil. Here’s what comes in the kit:
KIT INCLUDES:
(4) 8.2g SP-PRIME: Maximize your seed’s potential with SP-PRIME, a talc-based powder enriched with natural bio-stimulants and essential nutrients. Ensure a strong and uniform emergence for a robust food plot.
(1) 32oz SP-ENHANCE: SP-ENHANCE, a powerful blend of natural microbes and simple sugars, promotes the balance of living bacteria and fungi in the soil. Enhance nutrient cycling and boost your plot’s productivity.
(1) 8oz SP-ENERGY: Fuel the microbial communities in your soil and provide a high dose of calories to your plants instantly with SP-ENERGY. Watch your plants thrive and flourish with this impactful energy solution.
(1) 16oz SP-COMPOST: SP-COMPOST, a liquid concentrate of living soil microbes, aids in decomposing high-carbon-content materials. Enrich your soil profile with essential nutrients needed for optimal seed germination and plant growth.
(1) 1 Gal SP-LAUNCH: Jumpstart your soils with SP-LAUNCH, a blend of readily available nitrogen, calcium, and organic acids. Enjoy the benefits of enhanced nutrient uptake, strengthened cell walls, and overall improved plant health.

Domain No BS
I’m really excited to share my experience with Domain Outdoors and their fantastic seed blends! I tried their No BS blend last fall, and it truly impressed me—I even harvested my biggest buck from that very plot!

What makes No BS such an excellent choice? It’s packed with a mix of oats, clover, forage rape, radish, and chicory—deer absolutely adore these plants and consume them eagerly! This blend is super straightforward to plant, thrives in different soil types, and performs excellently across various regions. The strong early growth and ongoing forage production really help enhance your hunting opportunities throughout the entire season. I can’t recommend it enough!

Domain Comeback Kid
I’m truly excited about this fantastic seed mix featuring four delightful varieties of clover and alfalfa! The Comeback Kid is remarkable, boasting protein levels over 30 percent, making it incredibly enticing for deer. When your clover starts to bloom, it signals that it’s at its peak, and that’s the perfect moment to mow it down to about 6 to 8 inches. Consistent mowing not only helps keep pesky weeds at bay but also promotes vibrant regrowth of the clover and alfalfa. This rejuvenation stage offers exceptional nutrition and draws in even more deer, creating an inviting environment for all wildlife enthusiasts!

Domain Hot Chic
The third seed mix I purchased for my summer plots is called Hot Chic. This hardy blend consists of pH-tolerant, cold-season perennials that are designed to last for several years while providing nutrient-rich forage for deer and turkey. Hot Chic features a premium variety of chicory along with two types of clover. It offers highly attractive, high-protein forage that tolerates acidic soils, withstands drought, and effectively crowds out potential weed competition.
I’m really excited for the weather to warm up so I can start preparing my soil and planting seeds! I can’t wait to experiment with the Comeback Kid and Hot Chic varieties in two separate plots to see how the deer respond. As summer approaches, I’ll also explore some fantastic Domain mixes for my fall plantings that I think will thrive on my property. I’ll definitely keep you updated on the progress of the plots—it’s going to be an amazing journey!
