In February, bucks are active, visiting scrapes and exploring new areas in search of food and does. This is the time when I begin taking inventory of the bucks that have survived the hunting season and winter. Bucks frequently engage with scrapes to signal their presence to other deer in the area. Some bucks are on the hunt for food, while others are simply passing through in search of a new home. Regardless of their intentions, having cameras in place during this period is crucial for monitoring which bucks remain.
New Buck
I love surprises, especially when they involve new bucks. In February, I captured footage of a new buck. His tall brow tines and unique points inspired me to name him “Can Opener.” I hadn’t seen this buck before, but he is more than welcome to stay on the farm. He definitely has a lot of potential to become something special this fall.
Missing Something
Because bucks are active at scrapes year-round, I like to monitor which deer have shed their antlers. Placing cameras at scrapes helps me track when deer lose one or both sides of their racks. Once I observe that deer have shed their antlers, I focus on shed hunting to locate them. I have used this strategy over the years and have successfully found many sheds. Keep those scrapes active and the cameras running to help grow your shed collection.
Look Who Is Back
In January, we experienced remarkable snowfall, but that didn’t deter this spirited buck from visiting the BuckRope regularly! It seems he’s truly embraced the farm as his home, as he’s often spotted on camera engaging with the scrapes. It’s fascinating to watch him work the ground and mark his territory. I genuinely believe this buck has the potential to become quite impressive come fall, and I can’t wait to see how he develops!
Teenage Boys
Year-and-a-half-old bucks really remind me of teenage boys—full of energy and curiosity! Just look at these two young bucks as they playfully try to take down the BuckRope. I must say, I’m genuinely impressed by the durability of the BuckRope; it holds scent incredibly well! Even after their playful tug-of-war, one of the bucks stays curious, rearing up on his back legs to sniff the top of the rope. Their playful antics are truly delightful, and it’s heartwarming to witness the excitement and mischief of young bucks.
