Scouting has truly evolved in remarkable ways since my childhood, and looking back, I can’t help but smile at the memories I share with my dad. I vividly remember one day when he walked in with a bucket of sand. Naturally, I was curious and asked him what he planned to do with it. With a twinkle in his eye, he replied, “You’re going to carry that up to the White Oak Ridge, where those four deer trails intersect.” I was puzzled and exclaimed, “But deer don’t eat sand!” His smile reassured me that there was more to this adventure than I realized.
When we finally reached the intersection, I emptied the bucket, and he skillfully cleared away the sand to reveal the bare dirt beneath. As he worked, he explained, “Son, the only way we’ll know where the deer are coming from and going is by observing their tracks in the sand.” I was in awe; to me, he seemed like a genius, imparting wisdom that would stay with me forever.
One vivid memory I have is of him tying a string to a tree along the trail, keeping one end tight and the other loose. My curiosity got the better of me, and I asked him what it was for. He patiently explained, “When a deer walks by, its leg will catch the rope, pulling the loose end from the tree. When we return, it will show us which direction the deer came from.” I found this method to be clever, and it deepened my appreciation for the intricacies of nature.
A few years later, during a friendly conversation at the store, I discovered trail cameras and was instantly intrigued! I dedicated the entire summer to mowing grass to save up for one before deer season. Embracing this exciting new scouting method felt amazing, and I eagerly shared my enthusiasm with Dad, confidently insisting that it would make our efforts easier. He chuckled and playfully warned, “That gadget might not last; the first rain could ruin it.” But I remained optimistic, ready to embrace this new adventure!
But oh, how times have changed! The following year, Dad surprised me with two additional cameras. As the years went by, we transitioned from 35mm cameras to digital ones, and now we skillfully use smartphone cameras. Currently, I’m using the Reveal by Tactacam, which I believe perfectly suits my needs. I have four of them, and they perform wonderfully!
