African mornings in July are 40 degrees crisp, no rain, no bugs, and animals begin moving around 9 am. Imagine having an “opening day” every day in July with the ability to take multiple species on a single hunt. By ambushing near water, animals come to you where you can plan the perfect shot, have your family with you with ample time to video and take still pictures.

More Than 30 Years
Neil Summers convinced me to try African hunting in July of 1994 and opened my eyes to the greatest and most affordable adventure on earth. The first night in camp, I nearly froze because I thought Africa was hot in July. I wore every piece of clothing I’d brought and still ended up at a campfire in the middle of the night. As I poked the fire for extra warmth, I looked out of a dense jungle in the moonlight that was perfectly silent.

First Day Action
The outfitter dropped me off at a waterhole that had a tree stand and a pit blind. As an avid whitetail hunter, I chose the elevated platform but soon heard animals making what sounded like an alarm call. When it persisted, I climbed down and hid in the blind. I wanted an impala, warthog, and a kudu, and didn’t wait long before several impala males came to the water and began fighting. Next, several warthogs showed up, and in late morning, a large kudu bull. When the outfitter showed up at noon, he asked if I had seen anything. “I think I got three,” I said excitedly. Sure enough, the trackers went to work, and we soon had the bed of the Land Cruiser filled with game.

Why You Should Go
An African safari is the perfect couples hunt. Sure, you will have fun with a group of guys, but a safari is a chance to include your wife or girlfriend, even if she is a non-hunter. Accommodations are very comfortable, the food is great, and the staff will cater to your every need. You can travel together, hunt together, and relive every daily adventure over a great meal and by a hardwood campfire. You will see hundreds of animals and nearly fill your phone with memorable pictures. Safaris are amazing values. For the cost of a guided elk or moose hunt, you both can hunt five animals for a week or 10 days, including airfare.

It’s Not Too Late
I’m headed for South Africa in early August, where my grandson and I will hunt two concessions, one for plains game and the other for Cape buffalo. Most years, all outfitters would be full by this time, yet the war in the Middle East has led to many cancellations with parties of hunters postponing their safari until next year. We have room for two more people, which would be great for a Father/Son or couple, since my wife and my 14-year-old grandson will be along. If you’d like details, click here.
Bows and crossbows work well, and outfitters are very versed in their use.
