Sika deer inhabit Maryland’s swampy Eastern Shore and are Asian elk. Like their Western cousins, they have a whistling, five-note bugle and make wallows and rut in mid-October. Sika live in dense swamps where walking can be extremely difficult. Mosquitoes swarm and make ambush sites hell if the hunter is not prepared. Sika deer are notoriously nocturnal and often move only at first and last light.
